"I've heard tale of a Wise old man who lives up in these mountains. They say he teaches secret Taijutsu techniques to those that he finds Worthy." Gawain's Sandles clacked along the temple floors as he spoke and approached the man. Terribly rude as the man was obviously busy with something, but time was of the essence. Every minute the Princess was out of his sight was pure torture for Him. He had to see her and know that she was safe under his gaze. Of course that's why he was here wasn't it?
The temple was nice, but Gawain had served under kings. A hermits temple was hardly going to raise his eyebrow. Of course the natural beauty did plenty on it's own.
He got on one knee and bowed his head to the man he hoped would become his master.
"You seem like a wise old man, and I a worthy student. No mere mistake of fate that the two of use should meet. From you Master I seek the knowledge that legend says you hold. I seek it because there is a person in my life who I need to protect more than anything else in this life. Neither Pain, nor discomfort, or threat of death would make me shrink away from my duty to her. Will you give me the power I need to protect that which is most precious to me?"
The old man turned to Sir Gawain the knight of the rain. His eyes were completely obscured by his eyebrows and though in the real world this would be impossible as well as incredibly disturbing in an anime it was friendly and indearing. And thought Gawain could not see the eyes behind the brows he could tell without even looking that he had a gleam in them. A gleam that said. 'Boy you just made the biggest mistake of your entire life, and I'm going to make you regret that mistake. Now get down and give me twenty.' Only made more horrible by the fact that he couldn't actually see that gleam.

The firs few training exercises had been easy enough. If not completely humiliating to a knight of the rain country. You know it'd been that basic stuff that every grand master does to prove that a student is serious. clean the temple. Balance this egg on a spoon in your mouth while re shingling my house. You know the basic stuff. Gawain quickly finished all of these remedial chores quickly proving himself to be up to any challenge that this man would presents to him,. Be it mundane or other wise. He had a princess ot protect did this guy really thing that a few degrading chores were anything compared to what he'd had to go through t to protect and help her live a happy life? Not even close. He'd had to learn to do hairstyles, and cuttings in any way the princess pleased. That's right. Our mighty night is also a licensed barber a d beautician. Just so his princess wouldn't have to go a simple moment without thinking that her hair is the most beautiful in the room. So let's kick things up a notch shall we?
Gawain may have regreted asking for that. At the moment he stood half way up a sheer cliff that was so utterly smooth that it didn't even have places for you to place your hands to hold on to it. So obviously he had ropes or something to help him up it right? I mean how could a man possibly climb up a cliff side with no hand holds or ropes and hope to get very far? Well don't you worry dear Reader. Gawin did indeed have ropes to help him with his training. He had one length of it tied tightly around the entirety of his legs, blocking off any hope of him using them in this little exercise. Well at least he had his arms right? Well not really. You see... he also had a length of rope tided around his right arm too that kept it locked firmly behind his back making it of no use what so ever as well. So what did our young man have in way of climbing ability? Well not much really. All he had to his name was a foot long length of bone and his left arm. As well as his mouth, teeth, and chin if he got really desperate. Even the mighty Gawain had to admit that it was a pretty tought assignment tht he was on right now. And by assignment he ment self imposed torture. and by pretty hard he meant completely impossible and isnae. But for the princess even the impossible was not out of the realm of reality for him. Through her he could do all things. Heck he could probably even move the entirety of this mountain if she needed him to.
So with nothing but grit determination and a will to survive Gawain began to climb that cliff side. There were already a hundred feet below him, and a hundred more to go. The hot sun was beaming down on him like it has a grudge or something. It was weird Gawain had always heard that it was cooler up in the mountains. but perhaps he wasn't so high up that that started to take effect yet. Thougth as he looked back down to the height he had already covered he sure felt like he was though. His pale had was wrapped tightly around the hilt of his make shift pick. It's length stuck deep into the rock of the cliff. It was the only thing keeping him from falling to a horrible death, and as such his best friend for the next hour or so. He could feel the swear streaking down his body like a school of minnows in the ocean. He kind of felt like Gwyn's water dragon right now. He wondered if at this moment in time he could be used as a source of water for an attack or not. He bet he could.
With a mighty Tug Gawain pulled himself up by his pick, while at the same time removing it from the rock face. He jolted up a inch or two before he brought the pick back into the cliff side wall. This had been his life for the past forty minutes. Gains of inches, and sometimes even losses if he didn't time it right. It was by far the most physically demanding training that Gawain had ever done in his life. And the worse part of it? This wasn't even to unlock the technique! This was all just to see if he was able to handle waking up the ability. Well he was! He jumped at taking his pick out and stabbing it high above him in the cliff face before he had the chance to fall. If he was worthy of the princess putting herself under his protection then he could handle anything! This cliff could be made of nothing but horrible tigers and he wouldn't have cared, or even been slow down by it. He was a member of the Kaguya clan direct descendants of a goddes. If this cliff thought that it could slow him down well it had another thing coming didn't it?
At least he dindt' have to worry about his bones breaking on the wa up. If there was one thing he knew it was that his bones were stronger than even steel. They could hold up to this kind of torture even if the rest of his body couldn't. But if he did survive... well he wouldn't have to worr about his left arm being weaker than his right anymore. He was pretty sure that they should be on equal footing now.

Three weeks. Gawain thought with panting gasps. Three weeks is how long he'd been in there. He'd forgotten what the sun looked like by now. He'd been going in a perfectly straight line for a few days, but at some point a curve formed in his tunneling and now he couldn't see the entrance of the tunnel anymore. Heavily his back slamed agisnt the carved out surface of the tunnel walls. He slid down it and didn't mother wincing in pain as the jagged rocks sliced up the skin of his back as he slouched to the ground. Heavily on each of his arms rested a lance made from his hardest bones. They'd been strong. Survived all this time. They'd even last him. He'd run out of food and water days ago. He was suppose to be finished days ago. He didn't know what happened. Wasn't strong enough it looked like. He'd failed the princess, the master, and himself it had seemed. His strength of will was mighty that much was for sure, but not strong enough. It's funny. He though. His blind eyes moved around the surface of the obsidian walls. He couldn't see anything. Sun light by now just seemed like something he'd made up by this point. When Sir Kay had come to him he claimed that he'd chosen Li to be his partner because Gawain had he will of a mountain. Will of a mountain. Well that wasn't all it was cracked up to be it would seem.
That had been his mission. To test his will of a mountain aginst an actual mountain. He was suppose to dig his way with nothing but his knightly abilities through a mountain. Now at first that hadn't sounded all that difficult. It's just a mountain. The mountain is just earth. Earth was his element. He was the earth dragon slayer. He'd make this mountain his bitch and carve right through it. He could grow bones from his body that were stronger than steel. As if carving through a mile of stone was going to be difficult.
Yeah right. If it'd been that easy he'd be done by now wouldn't he? He'd be sipping down some nice cold lemonade rather than dying in a musty hole in a mountain. He'd sweated so much that he wasn't even wet anymore. His skin was all tried out, and all that remained was a salty shell that cracked every time he moved. Which wouldn't be much more if you just give him a few more minutes. He could feel the extreme of exhaustion climbing up on him. It was like a fog that was climbing up the back of his head. He could feel it crawling up his body and shutting everything down. Up his brain numbing his tought. Once it reached his eyes he'd close them and never open them back up. And that would be the tale of Sir Gawain. The Knight who'd killed the lord of the rain country would now fall victim to his own hubirus and pride. If only he'd live past this he'd be able to learn something from it. Add it to his collection of knightly exploits and ad humility to a chart of things that he was righteous and noble about.
At this moment in time it felt like the only thing that was keeping him awake was the blood that was tricking from his back. Once that pain receeded or he bleed out then he could finally rest. Though he didn't close his eyes he could feel himself go to rest. His body and mind only slightly aware of what was going on around him. He supposed that the pain wasn't the only thing keeping him from dying. There was one other thing in his life that kept him holding on for survival.
Can you guess it?
You're right! It was Princess Gwynevere. His charge, his duty, and his biggest joy in this world. she was everything that was good about this rotten world. At this very moment she was fresh air and wide open spaces, but that may have just been his claustrophobia kicking in. A few weeks inside of a tunnel will do that to you if you're not careful. It'd been over a month since he'd seen her last. It felt like a life time, it may have been, he felt so close to the end of his that it very well may have been. He wondered how Belin was handling her. He knew she could be a handful some times. Not because she was bad or anything she was just so energetic and excited about everything. She was free willed like the ocean. He wondered what sort of mischief she'd gotten into in the last month, without him. He wondered how much mischief she'd get into for the rest of her life... without him.
Despite all the fluids from his body being pretty much gone Gawain managed to let loose some tears as he considered never seeing the princess again. He was suppose to protect her always. And now... now nothing!
He'd promised to stand by her side until the end of time, and by god he would!
He brought himself to his full height. He propped himself up on his lances. With his passion soaring through him he felt something in his body pop. It felt like a bottle of champagne going off inside of him. With a mighty thrust he plowed his lances through the comparably soft stone of the mountain. They easily dug through the rock until they were deeply imbedded into it. He smiled, and with a final push from his legs the went flying through the rubble, and on the other side? Was day light! With that final blow he'd finished his tunnel through the mountain. As well as his training. He smiled happily, before collapsing from complete exhaustion.
